In recent days, smoke from about 362 wildfires burning across Canada has spread through major Canadian urban centers as well as several cities on the East Coast of the United States.

President Biden spoke with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and offered him federal support to respond to the wildfires in Canada, which have caused widespread air quality problems in the eastern United States.

Biden directed his administration to deploy “all available federal firefighting assets that can rapidly help suppress fires affecting Canadian and American communities,” the White House said.

So far, Washington has sent some 600 firefighters to Canada to fight the flames and Biden has ordered that all necessary federal resources be used to put out the fires that are already impacting both countries.

The Office of the Prime Minister of Canada said in a statement that Trudeau and Biden had a telephone conversation in which the head of the Canadian government thanked the help provided so far by the United States to fight the fires.

Canada is experiencing what NASA has described as an “unusually intense” start; of its wildfire season which included fires in the province of Quebec caused by lightning.

As fires “ran out of control” over the weekend bringing “code red” and “code orange” air quality to the states of Illinois, Michigan, and Wisconsin.

As the fires burned, the smoke reached the US, affecting more than a dozen states.
