Don and Jan Schultz, who recently moved into their home in New Iberia, Louisiana, from Arizona, woke up to their Australian Shepherd dog Panda, alerting them to the presence of an alligator in their home.

A Louisiana couple was shocked when they discovered an alligator in their home, which appeared to have entered the home through a small opening in the door intended for their dog.

Don and Jan Schultz, who recently moved into their home in New Iberia, Louisiana, from Arizona, woke up to their Australian Shepherd dog Panda, alerting them to the alligator's presence.

Thinking someone was home, Don Schultz headed into the hallway to see what his dog was reacting to when he found a 5-foot alligator, the home's owner told Lafayette ABC affiliate KATC. , in an interview.

The alligator entered the home through the doggie door, the couple said.

The couple called 911, and officers with the Louisiana Department of Fish and Wildlife captured the alligator.

“We are so thankful for the sheriffs and the Fish and Wildlife who came and dispatched the creature from our home. I guess he's swimming in a swamp somewhere, Jan Schultz told the outlet.

To prevent another incident or similar surprise, “We're taking precautions and putting in a locked dog door now that only opens with the dog's collars, so we don't have this surprise in the future,” Schultz said.
